Spring at the Woodland Park Zoo

 

Date time at the Woodland Park Zoo with my favorite little girls. My lovely nieces, of course! 

A beautiful morning to be out with the wild life. The bears were frisky and playful. Ice cream and carousel rides galore. And Aunt Nette spent the whole time running trying to keep up! Opted to not lug the SLR today. Photo and video documentation via the Iphone.

A friend was made.

Unfortunately my videos of us feeding the birds didn't turn out due to technical difficulties - ie operator error. We had a BLAST in the birdhouse. One startled me and perched on my shoulder for a few minutes. The girls LOVED feeding it. Mairead caught 2 on her stick and immediately started shaking with excitement and chased them away. Our day ended with a romp through the Family Farm, where we witnessed a chicken laying 4 eggs.  A wonderful, sunny and fun filled day!

Reminder of Self

Caught up with one of my dearest and long-time friends this morning. Hard to believe he & I have been friends over 20 years now. Time flies while life happens.

Absolutely cherished the catching up part and getting a glimpse into his family's hectic lives. Touching home base. And he provided me with a much needed mirror to reflect my soul. The friend he remembers - a woman with spark, passion, success and courage. Hallmarks of my character that I've neglected as of late. 

This morning I was working on a post about the search for inspiration to move forward. Maybe all the inspiration I need is contained within.

P-Patch: the Beginning

Welcome to my latest project! A big reason why I haven't been hanging out here much in the last few weeks. A little over 2 weekends ago I was introduced to my little patch of land for gardening. A lovely 10' by 20' plot.

The shape I inherited it in:

 

A bit daunting to say the least! But a healthy raspberry patch (the tall shrub in the back) was part of the mix. Little did I know what I was getting myself in for. Gardening is not for the weak of body or spirit. It's taken 20+ wheel barrel trips filled with weeds, hours of shoveling, lots of muscle tilling the ground, 2 trips to the nursery and 16 hours of manual labor to complete the initial spring planting.

Looking a little sparse and still needs a rock pathway, but I've planted an ambitious variety:

• Lettuce - Salad Mix, Romaine, Bib 
• Kale & Rainbow Swiss Chard
• Spinach
• Strawberries & thinned the Raspberries
• Onions - Walla Wallas, Italian Torpedos and scallions
• Garlic & Shallots
• Artichokes
• Brussel Sprouts
• Broccoli Rabe
• Snap Peas, Snow Peas and Shelling Peas
• Fennel & Dill
• Rosemary, Thyme, Italian Parsley, Oregano, Chives, Cilantro, Tarragon & Sage
• Lavenders - English and Spanish varieties
• Pansies and Dahlia bulbs

And slowly starting to meet my fellow gardeners. I've been missing attachment and involvement in my community. Hoping to make deeper roots in my neighborhood.
